“Experiences have clearly shown that an approach which demedicalizes birth, restores dignity and humanity to the process of childbirth, and returns control to the mother.” -Michel Odent

According to the World Health Organization, more then 85% of women are going to have a healthy pregnancy and childbirth. This statistic include pregnant women from countries where poor quality care is responsible for complications (unsafe abortion), is inaccessible or even unavailable.

How come natural childbirth is not the reality for the vast majority of women? How come labor and delivery need so many technical interventions?

I believe we need to rethink the way we treat women during labor and delivery. Pregnancy is not a sickness! It’s quite the opposite! You are full of life! Women in the modern world have lost out the precious time of refuge and sanctuary that traditionally took place during natural birth.

We need to understand what is going on in our body, mind and soul during labor and delivery in order to achieve a natural childbirth.Even if our body knows how to give birth, we have to be reminded of what we know already…and that we have almost lost in the last generations.

Natural child birth is a matter of intimacy…

Whether we choose to give birth at home, in a birth center or in a hospital, we need to understand the environment in which childbirth takes place. To achieve a natural child birth, we need to protect the privacy and the intimacy of a woman in labor. Interfering with birth increases risks regardless of where the birth takes place.

“I learned that human beings are mammals. All mammals hide themselves, isolate themselves to give birth. They need privacy. It is the same for humans. We should always be aware of this need for privacy”, says Dr. Michel Odent to summarize his 25 years of research.

I highly recommend any books by the French author Michel Odent. As a surgeon and obstetrician, he proved we can humanize birth with the concept of birthing rooms “like at home” and birthing pools. As a scientist and philosopher, he is proving that natural childbirth is directly linked to a better civilization of mankind. Nothing less! He as influenced a large number of midwifes and doulas.Needless to say he is rather controversial in the medical world!

My favorite book is The Scientification of Love that I first read a couple of years ago. Michel Odent is truly groundbreaking but, at the same time, he reminds us how our body is amazing when not disturbed during the birth process.

If you believe we can make a difference in the world, please read any book by Michel Odent. It’s pure empowerment! These books are musts for women, pregnant or not and men as well.

We need to recognize and rejoice fully in the power women gain through natural childbirth.

Giving birth is a powerful life lesson. Giving birth is not just a question of dealing with pain. It’s a question of being well prepared to accept that pain and to work with it. Not to fear it, to trust yourself, your inner strength, therefore your whole body.

Childbirth is not only about making babies. Childbirth is about making you a strong and competent mother. That confidence gain through a positive birth experience enables you to raise your child with self-assurance.

You will depend less on experts.Youwill be the expert!

I sincerely believe that the best way to prepare yourself to give birth is to read or hear empowering birth stories. Women can learn from one another and sharing and support is vital. Sharing positive experiences is a blessing for women who become mothers. It helps to calm the fear of giving birth and brings a certain wisdom.

I wish you a great deal of inspiration!
